Mule Alley
Contractor: Commerce Construction
Location: Fort Worth, TX
"A masterclass in 'respecting rather than replacing' history, Mule Alley breathes new life into century-old barns to prove the Fort Worth of tomorrow is built on the legacy of yesterday."
Mule Alley is a landmark adaptive reuse project that transformed the historic 1912 Horse and Mule Barns into a premier 180,000-square-foot mixed-use destination. Located in the heart of the Fort Worth Stockyards, the project involved the meticulous restoration of two massive brick barn blocks that once anchored the largest horse and mule market in the world.
Architectural firm Bennett Partners led the rehabilitation, focusing on preserving the soul of the structures—including restoring 500,000 hand-laid bricks and original clerestory windows—while modernizing the interiors for contemporary use. Today, the pedestrian-friendly alley serves as a vibrant “market street” featuring a curated collection of heritage retail brands (like Lucchese and King Ranch), chef-driven restaurants, and creative office spaces. The project is anchored by the Hotel Drover, a rustic-luxury boutique hotel that completes the district’s evolution from a neglected industrial site into a world-class hospitality hub.
North Texas Food Bank
Contractor: Hillwood Construction
Location: Plano, TX
"The Perot Family Campus is more than just a warehouse; it is a community-funded engine of hope designed to close the hunger gap across North Texas for generations to come."
The North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) officially opened its Perot Family Campus in Plano in 2018, marking a transformative milestone in the organization’s fight against hunger. The 230,000-square-foot facility serves as the centralized distribution hub for the NTFB’s 13-county service area, consolidating multiple locations into one state-of-the-art campus.
Named in honor of a lead gift from the Perot family, the facility includes a high-capacity warehouse with nearly 70,000 square feet of cold storage, a massive volunteer sorting area, and modern administrative offices. A standout feature is “Jan’s Garden,” a community learning garden dedicated to the memory of late CEO Jan Pruitt. This strategic relocation allowed the NTFB to triple its refrigerated capacity and established a long-term infrastructure capable of providing access to 92 million nutritious meals annually.
